A brief history of the city of Jakarta You Need To Know
The city of Jakarta's birthday has been established since June 22, 1527.
This is based on the incident of the conquest of Sunda Kelapa by Fatahillah and his troops.
The name Sunda Kelapa was later changed to Jayakarta.
1. Port City
Jakarta's history begins with the busy Sunda Kelapa port area. On June 22, 1527,
Prince Fatahillah came and founded the city of Jayakarta to replace Sunda Kelapa.
2. Founding of Batavia
The city of Jayakarta is also a place for commodity trading between traders from China, India, Arabia, Europe and the archipelago.
In 1619, Jayakarta was destroyed by the Dutch VOC under the leadership of Jan Pieterszoon Coen.
This colonial government built a new city on the west side of the Ciliwung river.
The area built by the VOC was later named Batavia.
The name Batavia is taken from Batavieren, the ancestors of the Dutch people.
Batavia was built similar to cities in the Netherlands.
The arrangement is straight and separated by canals. The Batavia area was surrounded by a wall as a fortress and a moat as protection.
In 1650, the Batavia area became a place for Europeans to settle.
Outside the walls and gates of Batavia, Chinese, Javanese, Indian and other indigenous people lived.
The name Batavia was used for more than 3 centuries, from around 1619 -1621 to 1942.
3. The name Djakarta
Under Japanese colonial rule, Batavia changed its name to Djakarta Tokubetsu Shi or Djakarta on December 8 1942.
The word Jakarta is an acronym for Djajakarta (Jayakarta).
This name change effort aims to eliminate Dutch influence in this area or de-Nederlandize it.
The name Jakarta continued to be used after Japan lost World War II and Indonesia became independent on August 17 1945.
The full name Djakarta Tokubetsu Shi was no longer used.
4. Jakarta Government
Jakarta has not been specifically mentioned in the 1945 Constitution.
It was only in the 1949 RIS Constitution Article 50 paragraph 1 and the Greater Jakarta Government Law that the government questioned Jakarta's position further.
In Emergency Law no. 20 of 1950, regulated the government of the capital city of Jakarta and the position of the city of Jakarta as a region that managed its own household.
5. Inauguration of the name Jakarta 1956
The name Jakarta was reaffirmed on June 22 1956 by the Mayor of Jakarta Sudiro (1953-1960).
In 1959, this municipality under the mayor was promoted to Level One Region status under the leadership of the governor.
The first governor of Jakarta was Soemarno Sosroatmodjo.
In 1961, Jakarta's status rose from Level One Region to Special Capital Region (DKI).
So, from the moment of the struggle for Sunda Kelapa, every June 22 is now celebrated as the birthday of Jakarta, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia.
